The National Eye Institute studies and supports research on blindness and eye disease. It funds training, research, and public health information about vision. The Institute's Director may also give grants to nonprofit vision research centers.
The National Eye Institute's job is to study and support work on blinding eye diseases, vision disorders, and how eyesight works. It funds research, training programs, and information about eye health. This includes helping protect people's sight and addressing the special health needs of blind people. Under section 285i–1, the Institute's Director* may also run a grant program for public and private nonprofit vision research facilities.
The general purpose of the National Eye Institute (hereafter in this subpart referred to as the “Institute”) is the conduct and support of research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind. Subject to section 285i–1 of this title, the Director* of the Institute may carry out a program of grants for public and private nonprofit vision research facilities.
