42 U.S.C. § 6346 — Sustainable manufacturing initiative

(a) As part of the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Secretary^* must, when a manufacturer requests it, conduct onsite technical assessments to find opportunities to (1) maximize industrial-process and cross-cutting-system energy efficiency; (2) prevent pollution and reduce waste; (3) use water more efficiently in manufacturing; (4) conserve natural resources; and (5) meet other goals the Secretary considers appropriate. (b) To carry out assessment recommendations and speed adoption of new and existing energy-efficient technologies and processes, the Secretary must coordinate with (1) the Advanced Manufacturing Office; (2) the Building Technologies Office; (3) the Federal Energy Management Program; and (4) the private sector and other suitable agencies, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology. (c) As part of its industrial-efficiency programs, the Department must run a joint industry-government partnership to research, develop, and demonstrate sustainable manufacturing and industrial technologies and processes that maximize plant energy efficiency, reduce pollution, and conserve natural resources.
