43 U.S.C. § 55 — Field notes delivered to States; access to

This section guarantees federal surveyors free access to land survey records that have been handed over to the states. Under the authority and direction of the Secretary of the Interior, or an officer the Secretary designates, any deputy surveyor or other agent of the United States has free access to the field notes, maps, records, and other papers described in section 53 of this title. They can use this access to take extracts from those records or make copies of them, and they cannot be charged for doing so.
