44 U.S.C. § 3563 — Statistical agencies

(a) Responsibilities. (1) Each statistical agency or unit must (A) produce and distribute relevant, timely statistical information; (B) conduct credible and accurate statistical activities; (C) conduct objective statistical activities; and (D) protect providers' trust by keeping their responses confidential and using them only for statistical purposes. (2) It must adopt policies, best practices, and procedures to carry out those duties. (b) Support. Each agency head must enable, support, and facilitate statistical agencies and units in carrying out subsection (a)(1). (c) Regulations. The Director must issue regulations implementing this section. (d) Definitions. “Accurate” statistics consistently match the events and trends measured. “Confidentiality” is the duty or condition of not disclosing information to an unauthorized party. “Objective” statistical activities are accurate, clear, complete, and unbiased. “Relevant” statistical information means processes, activities, and other matters likely useful to policymakers and public- and private-sector data users.
