A seaman’s engagement that violates United States law is void. The seaman may leave at any time and recover the higher of the port’s highest wage rate or the promised wage.
An engagement of a seaman that violates a United States law is void. The seaman may leave the vessel’s service at any time and may recover the higher of the highest wage rate at the port where the seaman was engaged or the amount promised when the seaman was engaged.
An engagement of a seaman contrary to a law of the United States is void. A seaman so engaged may leave the service of the vessel* at any time and is entitled to recover the highest rate of wages at the port from which the seaman was engaged or the amount agreed to be given the seaman at the time of engagement, whichever is higher.
