This law lets the Secretary of Transportation fine the owner of an American Great Lakes vessel up to $1,000,000 for any act that could get the vessel's special designation revoked. The Secretary must first give notice and a chance for a hearing.
If an American Great Lakes vessel* does something that could cause its designation to be revoked under section 55335, the Secretary of Transportation may punish the owner with a civil fine of up to $1,000,000. Before imposing this fine, the Secretary must give the owner notice and a chance for a hearing.
After notice and an opportunity for a hearing, the Secretary of Transportation may impose a civil penalty of not more than $1,000,000 on the owner of an American Great Lakes vessel* for any act for which the designation may be revoked under section 55335 of this title.
