46 U.S.C. § 56104 — Penalty for false statements

This law makes it a crime to knowingly lie to the Secretary of Transportation or another Department of Transportation official about an important fact, in order to get approval under section 56101 or 56102. Someone convicted can be fined, imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
If a person knowingly tells the Secretary of Transportation, or any other officer, employee, or agent of the Department of Transportation, a false statement about a material (important) fact — in order to get the Secretary's approval under section 56101 or 56102 — that person can be fined, imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
A person that knowingly makes a false statement of a material fact to the Secretary of Transportation or another officer, employee, or agent of the Department of Transportation, to obtain the Secretary’s approval under section 56101 or 56102 of this title, shall be fined under title 18, imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both.
