A vessel acquired under this chapter cannot be used commercially once it turns 25 years old. Two exceptions apply: during a period when vessels can be requisitioned, or on routes serving only foreign trade.
An obsolete vessel* acquired under this chapter cannot be used for regular commercial business once it is, or turns, 25 years old.
There are two exceptions. (1) The vessel* may still be used during a period when the government is allowed to requisition vessels under chapter 563 of this title. (2) Unless another part of this subtitle says otherwise, the vessel may be used on trade routes that serve only the foreign trade of the United States — not domestic routes.
An obsolete vessel* acquired under this chapter that is or becomes at least 25 years old may not be used for commercial operation. However, the vessel* may be used—
during a period in which vessels may be requisitioned under chapter 563 of this title; or
except as otherwise provided in this subtitle, on trade routes serving only the foreign trade of the United States.
