46 U.S.C. § 57504 — Charter or sale of vessels acquired by Department of Transportation

Vessels the Department of Transportation receives or acquires in any way may be chartered or sold. The Secretary of Transportation does this under the rules set out in this chapter.
Whenever the Department of Transportation ends up owning a vessel* — however it was transferred or acquired — the Secretary of Transportation may charter that vessel out or sell it. The Secretary must follow the specific rules laid out elsewhere in this chapter when doing so.
Vessels transferred to or otherwise acquired by the Department of Transportation in any manner may be chartered or sold by the Secretary of Transportation as provided in this chapter.
