47 U.S.C. § 356 — Approval of installations by Commission

The Commission can approve where and how required radio equipment is installed on ships covered by this law. It can approve the needed equipment, gear, and spare parts. It can also require extra equipment for emergencies or to improve radio use.
This section gives the Commission authority over any ship* covered by this part of the law, as far as necessary to carry out that part's purposes and requirements. The Commission may:
(1) Approve the details of exactly where and how equipment required by this part — or equipment made necessary by this part's purposes and requirements — is installed.
(2) Approve the installations, apparatus, and spare parts needed to comply with this part's purposes and requirements.
(3) Require additional equipment beyond what this part specifically lists, if the Commission decides it's necessary so the radio installation works properly, or so radio communication works well during an emergency or distress situation.
Insofar as is necessary to carry out the purposes and requirements of this part, the Commission shall have authority, for any ship* subject to this part—
To approve the details as to the location and manner of installations of the equipment required by this part or of equipment necessitated by reason of the purposes and requirements of this part.
To approve installations, apparatus, and spare parts necessary to comply with the purposes and requirements of this part.
To prescribe such additional equipment as may be determined to be necessary to supplement that specified in this part, for the proper functioning of the radio installation installed in accordance with this part or for the proper conduct of radio communication in time of emergency or distress.
