49 U.S.C. § 30169 — Annual reports

(a) General report. The Secretary of Transportation must submit, by July 1 each year, a report to the President for submission to Congress, on how this chapter was administered during the prior calendar year. The report must include (1) a thorough statistical compilation of accidents and injuries; (2) the motor vehicle safety standards in effect or set under this chapter; (3) how well those standards are being observed; (4) a summary of current research grants and contracts, and the problems they address; (5) an analysis and evaluation of completed research and technological progress; (6) enforcement actions; (7) how much technical information reached the scientific community, and how much consumer-oriented information reached the public; and (8) recommendations for legislation to help states cooperate on improving traffic safety and strengthening the national traffic safety program. (b) Report on importing motor vehicles. Within 18 months after regulations were first prescribed under a specific 1988 law provision, the Secretary had to submit a report to Congress on the actions taken to carry out the import subchapter of this chapter and how effective those actions were, including any testing done under section 30146(c)(2). After that first report, the Secretary must submit a report to Congress under this subsection every year by July 31.
