49 U.S.C. § 46507 — False information and threats

Lying about a bomb or hijacking plot, or making a real-sounding threat to hijack or attack a plane, is a crime. It can mean up to 5 years in prison. The threat must seem genuine, with real intent to carry it out.
An individual is fined under title 18, imprisoned up to 5 years, or both, if they (1) — knowing the information is false, and acting willfully and maliciously, or with reckless disregard for human safety — give, or cause to be given, false information under circumstances where it might reasonably be believed, about an alleged attempt to violate section 46502(a) (aircraft piracy), 46504 (interfering with flight crew), 46505 (weapons or explosives on aircraft), or 46506 (certain crimes on aircraft); or (2)(A) threaten to violate one of those same sections, or cause such a threat to be made, and (B) show the apparent determination and will to carry it out.
An individual shall be fined under title 18, imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both, if the individual—
knowing the information to be false, willfully and maliciously or with reckless disregard for the safety of human life, gives, or causes to be given, under circumstances in which the information reasonably may be believed, false information about an alleged attempt being made or to be made to do an act that would violate section 46502(a), 46504, 46505, or 46506 of this title; or
threatens to violate section 46502(a), 46504, 46505, or 46506 of this title, or causes a threat to violate any of those sections to be made; and
has the apparent determination and will to carry out the threat.
