49 U.S.C. § 80306 — Relationship to other laws

This law explains how this chapter relates to other laws. It adds to, rather than replaces, existing fine, penalty, and forfeiture laws. Existing customs seizure and forfeiture procedures also apply here, where consistent.
(a) Chapter as Additional Law. This chapter adds to, and does not replace, any other law that:
(1) imposes fines, penalties, or forfeitures, or lets someone compromise (settle) them; or
(2) provides for seizing, condemning, or disposing of forfeited property, or the money it brings in.
(b) Laws Applicable to Seizures and Forfeitures. As long as they fit and don't conflict with this chapter, these other legal rules also apply to a seizure or forfeiture under this chapter:
(1) laws about seizing, forfeiting, and condemning vehicles and vessels that violate customs laws;
(2) laws about disposing of those vehicles or vessels, or the money from selling them;
(3) laws about settling (compromising) those forfeitures or related claims; and
(4) laws about paying a reward to an informer who helped with those forfeitures.
This chapter is in addition to another law—
imposing, or authorizing the compromise of, fines, penalties, or forfeitures; or
providing for seizure, condemnation, or disposition of forfeited property, or the proceeds from the property.
To the extent applicable and consistent with this chapter, the following apply to a seizure or forfeiture under this chapter:
provisions of law related to the seizure, forfeiture, and condemnation of vehicles and vessels violating the customs laws.
provisions of law related to the disposition of those vehicles or vessels or the proceeds from the sale of those vehicles or vessels.
provisions of law related to the compromise of those forfeitures or claims related to those forfeitures.
provisions of law related to the award of compensation to an informer about those forfeitures.
