No money from the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 can be used, directly or indirectly, to influence a federal election or run voter registration drives. It also bars using that money to pay any Office of Economic Opportunity worker's salary while they do this kind of activity in their official role.
This section restricts how a specific pot of federal money can be used. None of the funds Congress appropriated under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (found at 42 U.S.C. § 2701 and following) may be used, directly or indirectly, to pay for any activity designed to influence who wins a federal election. Those funds also cannot pay for any voter registration activity. Separately, this money cannot be used to pay the salary of any Office of Economic Opportunity officer or employee for time they spend, in their official capacity, doing either of those things: trying to influence a federal election or engaging in voter registration activity.
No part of any funds appropriated to carry out the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 [42 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.] shall be used to finance, directly or indirectly, any activity designed to influence the outcome of any election to Federal office, or any voter registration activity, or to pay the salary of any officer or employee of the Office of Economic Opportunity who, in his official capacity as such an officer or employee, engages in any such activity.
