This section defines "designation" and "protection." Designation means officially registering a historic property under State or local criteria. Protection means a local government review process, required by State or local law, before that property can be demolished or changed.
This section defines two terms used in this chapter. (1) "Designation" means identifying and officially registering a property for protection, under criteria a State* or local government* sets for historic property* that matters within its jurisdiction. (2) "Protection" means protecting property through a local review process, under State or local law, that applies before anyone can demolish, change, or otherwise affect historic property that has been designated under this chapter.
In this chapter:
The term “designation” means the identification and registration of property for protection that meets criteria established by a State* or locality for significant historic property* within the jurisdiction of a local government*.
The term “protection” means protection by means of a local review process under State or local law for proposed demolition of, changes to, or other action that may affect historic property designated pursuant to this chapter.
