6 U.S.C. § 592a — Technology research and development investment strategy for nuclear and radiological detection

(a) No later than one year after October 13, 2006, the Secretary^*, the Secretary of Energy, the Secretary of Defense, and the Director of National Intelligence must submit to Congress a research-and-development investment strategy for nuclear and radiological detection.

(b) The strategy must include: (1) a long-term technology roadmap addressing the mission needs of the Department^*, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and the Office^* of the Director of National Intelligence; (2) the budget needs for meeting the roadmap; and (3) documentation explaining how those four organizations will carry out the strategy.

(c) No later than one year after October 13, 2006, the Secretary must report to the appropriate congressional committees on: (1) the effect of this title and its amendments on responsibilities under section 182; and (2) the Department’s efforts to coordinate, integrate, and set priorities for basic and applied research, development, testing, and evaluation of technology and systems to detect, prevent, protect against, and respond to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear terrorist attacks.

(d) The Director for Domestic Nuclear Detection and the Under Secretary for Science and Technology must jointly notify Congress every year that the strategy and technology roadmap under (a) and (b) are consistent with the national policy and strategic plan required under section 182(2).
