The Census Bureau can give people copies of their own census reports if they pay the cost. It can also sell statistics that don't reveal any one person's answers. It cannot use this information to harm the person who gave it.

(a) The Secretary may give a respondent, or that respondent's heir, successor, or authorized agent, authenticated transcripts or copies of reports containing what the respondent told the Census Bureau. The Secretary does this upon written request, and the requester must pay the actual or estimated cost of finding the records and making the copies. (b) The Secretary may also share copies of tabulations and other statistics that do not reveal what any single respondent reported. The Secretary may prepare special statistical compilations and surveys for federal agencies, the D.C. government, the government of a U.S. possession or area, state and local agencies, or other public and private groups, if they pay the actual or estimated cost. For nonprofit groups, the Secretary may run joint statistical projects, as long as the purpose is already allowed by law and the Secretary decides the costs are shared fairly. All of this is subject to the limits in sections 6(c) and 9 of this title. (c) Information given out under this section can never be used to hurt the respondent or anyone else it describes. The only exception is using it to prosecute violations of this title. (d) Any money the government collects for this work goes into a separate account. That account can pay the direct costs of the work, repay the appropriations that first covered those costs, or refund any extra money collected.
