25 U.S.C. § 1616i — Additional incentives for health professionals

(a) Incentive pay. The Secretary may give the special incentive pay authorized by 37 U.S.C. § 302(b) or § 335(b) to civilian Indian Health Service medical officers assigned to and serving in positions on the list under subsection (b)(1) when recruitment or retention is difficult. (b) Positions and bonuses. (1) The Secretary must create and update each year a list of Service health-professional positions that are hard to recruit or retain. (2)(A) The Secretary may give a bonus to a commissioned officer or civil-service employee—other than a commissioned medical officer, dental officer, optometrist, or veterinarian—who works in or is assigned to and serves in a listed Service position. (B) An employee may receive no more than $2,000 in bonuses under this paragraph during any one-year period. (c) Schedules. The Secretary may create programs allowing flexible and compressed work schedules for Service health professionals under the rules in subchapter II of chapter 61 of title 5.
