42 U.S.C. § 300x — Formula grants to States

(a) In general — Every year, the Secretary — acting through the Director of the Center for Mental Health Services — decides how much money each State gets. The amount follows the formula in section 300x–7. The Secretary then gives the State that amount, but only if the State sends in an application that follows section 300x–6. (b) Purpose of grants — Before getting the money, a State must agree ("a funding agreement") to spend it only on these things, and only in the way section 300x–5 allows: (1) Community mental health services for adults with a serious mental illness and children with a serious emotional disturbance, using the definitions from section 300x–1(c). (2) Carrying out the plan the State submitted under section 300x–1(a) for that year. (3) Checking how well the programs and services under the plan are working. (4) Planning, running the program, and educational activities connected to providing the services in the plan.
