54 U.S.C. § 308103 — Battlefield acquisition grant program

(a) Eligible Site Defined. In this section, an "eligible site" (1) means a site that (A) is not inside a unit of the National Park System, and (B) is identified as a battlefield in the Battlefield Reports, but (2) does not include sites the Battlefield Reports identify only as "associated historic sites." (b) Establishment. The Secretary must set up a battlefield acquisition grant program. Under it, the Secretary may give grants to States, Tribes, local governments, and nonprofit organizations to pay the federal government's share of the cost of buying an interest in an eligible site, in order to preserve and protect it. (c) Nonprofit Partners. A State, Tribe, or local government may use one of these grants to acquire an interest in an eligible site by partnering with a nonprofit organization. (d) Non-Federal Share. Whoever gets the grant must pay at least 50 percent of the total cost of acquiring the interest themselves — the federal grant can't cover more than half. (e) Limitation on Land Use. Any interest in an eligible site bought with one of these grants — no matter who buys it — is subject to the restrictions in section 200305(f)(3) of this title. (f) Authorization of Appropriations. Congress may appropriate up to $18,000,000 per year, for fiscal years 2020 through 2028, for the Secretary to give out as grants under this section.
