The Secretary must help identify, research, and protect historic battlefields, working with citizens, governments, and nonprofits. The Secretary can pay for this through grants, contracts, or agreements. Congress allows up to $3 million a year for this work, and the money doesn't expire.
(a) In General. Using the existing national historic preservation program as much as practical, the Secretary* must encourage, support, assist, recognize, and partner with citizens, federal agencies, States, Tribes, local governments, other public entities, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations to identify, research, evaluate, explain, and protect historic battlefields and related sites, at the national, state, and local level.
(b) Financial Assistance. To carry this out, the Secretary may use a cooperative agreement, grant, contract, or any other commonly used way of providing financial assistance.
(c) Authorization of Appropriations. Congress may appropriate up to $3,000,000 per fiscal year to carry out this section, and that money stays available until it's spent.
Using the established national historic preservation program to the extent practicable, the Secretary* shall encourage, support, assist, recognize, and work in partnership with citizens, Federal agencies, States, Tribes, local governments, other public entities, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations in identifying, researching, evaluating, interpreting, and protecting historic battlefields and associated sites on a national, State, and local level.
To carry out subsection (a), the Secretary may use a cooperative agreement, grant, contract, or other generally adopted means of providing financial assistance.
There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $3,000,000 for each fiscal year, to remain available until expended.
