54 U.S.C. § 312303 — Establishment

(a) Establishment. This section creates the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad. (b) Membership. The Commission has 21 members, all appointed by the President. The President appoints 7 of them after consulting the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and 7 after consulting the President pro tempore of the Senate. (c) Term. (1) In general. Except as paragraph (2) says, each member serves a 3-year term. (2) Vacancy. A member appointed to fill an open seat serves only the rest of the term that the previous member would have served. (3) Member until successor appointed. A member can keep serving past the end of a term until a successor is appointed. (d) Chairman. The President picks the Commission's Chairman from among its members. (e) Meetings. The Commission must meet at least once every 6 months. (f) Compensation and Expenses. (1) Compensation. Members get no pay for serving on the Commission. (2) Expenses. When members travel away from home for Commission business, they can be reimbursed for travel costs, including a daily allowance instead of actual meal and lodging costs, the same way the government reimburses part-time employees under section 5703 of title 5.
