The basic monthly insurance benefit is $1,000, adjusted yearly for inflation. Members can instead choose a reduced benefit — half the basic amount — or an enhanced benefit ranging from $1,500 up to $5,000 a month. For a covered-service period shorter than a month, the payment is prorated by the day. Adjusted benefit amounts are rounded to the nearest $10.

(a) Basic Benefit. The basic benefit for an insured member is $1,000 per month, adjusted for inflation as (d) describes. (b) Reduced and Enhanced Benefits. Under the Secretary's rules, a member may instead choose: (1) a reduced benefit equal to half the basic benefit; or (2) an enhanced benefit of $1,500, $2,000, $2,500, $3,000, $3,500, $4,000, $4,500, or $5,000 a month, also adjusted for inflation. (c) Amount for Partial Month. If a member's covered service in a period is less than a full month, the payment for that period is 1/30th of the monthly benefit rate, multiplied by the number of days served. (d) Adjustment of Amounts. (1) The Secretary must check each year how inflation affects benefits, and adjust the amounts in (a) and (b)(2) to keep their real value steady. (2) If an adjusted amount isn't a multiple of $10, it gets rounded to the nearest $10 — except that an amount that is a multiple of $5 but not $10 gets rounded down.
