This law counts certain Army and Air National Guard service as federal Reserve service. It applies to training, full-time Guard duty, and inactive-duty training, for benefit purposes. This lets Guard members and their families qualify for Reserve benefits.

This section explains how certain service by National Guard members counts toward benefits for Reserve members. (a) Army National Guard. For laws that give benefits to Army National Guard members and their families: (1) Paid military training, duty, or other service a member performs as an Army National Guard member counts as the same kind of service performed as a Reserve of the Army in federal service. (2) Full-time National Guard duty counts as active duty in federal service as an Army Reserve. (3) Inactive-duty training performed under section 502 of title 32 or another law counts as inactive-duty training in federal service as an Army Reserve. (b) Air National Guard. The same three rules apply to Air National Guard members, but for benefits and federal service as a Reserve of the Air Force instead of the Army: (1) Paid military training, duty, or other service counts as the same kind of service as an Air Force Reserve. (2) Full-time National Guard duty counts as active duty as an Air Force Reserve. (3) Inactive-duty training under section 502 of title 32, or another law, counts as inactive-duty training as an Air Force Reserve.
