10 U.S.C. § 14103 — Oath of members

Every officer who serves as a member of a selection board convened under section 14101 must first take an oath. In that oath, the member promises to do the board's work without prejudice or partiality -- meaning without bias for or against any officer being considered. The oath also commits the member to keep two things in mind while judging: the special fitness of each officer under review, and the overall efficiency of the member's own armed force. In short, board members must promise up front to be fair and to think about what's best for both the individual officers and the military branch as a whole.
