10 U.S.C. § 280 — Enhancement of cooperation with civilian law enforcement officials

(a) The Secretary of Defense, working with the Attorney General, must hold a briefing every year for law enforcement officers in every state — including officers from that state's cities, counties, and other local governments. The briefing covers what information, training, technical support, equipment, and facilities the Department of Defense makes available to civilian police. (b) Each briefing must cover: (1) how civilian police can get information, equipment, training, expert advice, and other support under this chapter, and how they can get surplus military equipment; (2) what kinds of information, equipment, facilities, training, and advice the Department of Defense actually offers; and (3) a current, complete list of military equipment that's either suitable for police use from the Department of Defense, or available as surplus property from the General Services Administration. (c) The Attorney General and the Administrator of General Services must: (1) set up an office (or offices) to keep that equipment list and to give police information about available surplus military equipment; and (2) give civilian police nationwide a toll-free phone number to reach that office.
