10 U.S.C. § 5501 — National missile defense policy

United States policy is to maintain a next-generation missile defense shield, defend against increasingly complex missile and other aerial threats, and preserve an effective nuclear response capability to deter strategic attacks on the homeland.
It is United States policy—
(1) to defend the United States and its citizens by deploying and maintaining a next-generation missile defense shield;
(2) to deter and defend the United States, its citizens, and its critical infrastructure against foreign attacks using increasingly complex ballistic missiles, hypersonic glide missiles, cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial threats; and
(3) to guarantee that the United States has a viable, effective nuclear response capability and to support continued deterrence of strategic attacks against the United States homeland.
It is the policy of the United States—
to provide for the common defense of the United States and its citizens by deploying and maintaining a next-generation missile defense shield;
to deter and defend the United States, citizens of the United States, and critical infrastructure of the United States, against the threat of foreign attack by increasingly complex ballistic, hypersonic glide, and cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial threats; and
to guarantee the viability of an effective nuclear response capability of the United States and to support the continued deterrence of strategic attacks against the homeland of the United States.
