The Secretary of Defense must consult the Joint Chiefs chairman. The Secretary must ensure that the military considers an officer’s Joint Staff performance in promotion, retention, and assignment decisions.
The Secretary of Defense, after consulting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, must ensure that Army*, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force policies about officers’ promotion, retention, and assignment give appropriate consideration to an officer’s performance as a Joint Staff member.
The Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, shall ensure that officer* personnel policies of the Army*, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force concerning promotion, retention, and assignment give appropriate consideration to the performance of an officer as a member of the Joint Staff.
