A midshipman who fails an exam is normally discharged from the Naval Academy and the Navy. The Academic Board can decide to let them stay instead.
If a midshipman is found deficient on any exam, they are discharged from the Naval Academy and from the naval service — unless the Academic Board recommends otherwise.
Midshipmen found deficient at any examination shall, unless the Academic Board recommends otherwise, be discharged from the Naval Academy and from the naval service.
