in plain englishAI-generated · not legal advice

There is an Inspector General of the Department of the Air Force, assigned by the Secretary from general officers. The Inspector General looks into how well the department runs, proposes inspections, and works with the Defense Department's Inspector General.

(a) There is an Inspector General of the Department of the Air Force. The Secretary of the Air Force must assign a general officer from the Air Force or Space Force to this job. Normally an officer can't serve more than four years in this role, unless the Secretary specially finds that extending the tour serves the public interest. (b) When the Secretary, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, or the Chief of Space Operations directs, the Inspector General must: (1) look into and report on how disciplined, efficient, and economical the Department is; and (2) do any other duties the Secretary, Chief of Staff, or Chief of Space Operations assigns. (c) The Inspector General regularly proposes inspection plans to the Secretary and recommends any extra inspections or investigations that seem needed. (d) The Inspector General must fully cooperate with the Department of Defense's own Inspector General, on that office's duties under chapter 4 of title 5 as they relate to the Department of the Air Force. (e) The Secretary decides how many deputies and assistants the Inspector General has. Each one must be an Air Force or Space Force officer, assigned by the Secretary, serving no more than four years, under rules the Secretary sets.
