10 U.S.C. § 937 — Art. 137. Articles to be explained

(a) Enlisted members. (1) The articles listed in (3) must be carefully explained to each enlisted member^* at or within 14 days after initial active duty^*, initial reserve-component duty status, or initial active duty or Space Force active status^*. (2) They must be explained again after six months of active duty; for reserve members, after basic or recruit training; for Space Force members, after six months of sustained duty^* or, if not on sustained duty, after basic or recruit training; and when the member reenlists. (3) The listed articles are sections 802, 803, 807–815, 825, 827, 831, 837, 838, 855, 877–934, and 937–939 of this title, corresponding to articles 2, 3, 7–15, 25, 27, 31, 37, 38, 55, 77–134, and 137–139.

(b) Officers. (1) The articles listed in (2) must be carefully explained to each officer^* at or within six months after the officer first enters active duty as an officer or is first commissioned in a reserve component or the Space Force. (2) These include the articles in (a)(3) and any others the responsible Secretary prescribes by regulation.

(c) Certain officers’ training. Under regulations of the responsible Secretary, officers who can convene courts-martial or impose nonjudicial punishment must receive periodic training on this chapter’s purposes and administration. Under Defense Department regulations, such officers assigned to joint or combatant commands must receive additional specialized training about applying the chapter there.

(d) Text availability. At a member’s request, the chapter and presidential regulations under it must be available for personal examination by active-duty, reserve-component, and Space Force members. The Defense Secretary must maintain updated electronic versions and make them available on the Internet.
