This section defines three terms used in sections 15c through 15f: "State attorney general," "State," and "natural persons." A "State attorney general" doesn't include lawyers paid on certain contingency-fee arrangements, and "natural persons" doesn't include businesses like proprietorships or partnerships.

This section defines three terms for sections 15c, 15d, 15e, and 15f. (1) "State attorney general" means a state's chief legal officer, or anyone else state law authorizes to bring actions under section 15c — this includes the Corporation Counsel of the District of Columbia. But it excludes anyone hired on: (A) a contingency fee that's a percentage of the money recovered under this section; or (B) any other contingency-fee arrangement, unless a court sets the winning attorney's fee under section 15c(d)(1) instead. (2) "State" means a state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or any other U.S. territory or possession. (3) "Natural persons" does not include proprietorships or partnerships — only individual people count.
