16 U.S.C. § 24 — Jurisdiction over park; fugitives from justice
submitted 132 years ago by ch. 72 to r/title-16-CONSERVATION · 114 words · no verdicts yet
Yellowstone National Park is under the sole and exclusive control of the United States government. All federal laws for such places apply inside the park, no matter its exact boundaries. Courts in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming can still serve process there, and fugitives face Wyoming's fugitive laws.
Yellowstone National Park — with its boundaries as they are now, or as they may later be redefined or expanded — is under the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the United States.
Every law that applies to places under that kind of exclusive federal jurisdiction has full force and effect inside the park.
Nothing in this Act stops a court that otherwise has jurisdiction in the States of Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming from serving civil or criminal legal process inside the park.
Anyone fleeing justice who takes refuge in the park is subject to the same laws as someone fleeing justice who is found in the State of Wyoming.
The Yellowstone National Park, as its boundaries now are defined, or as they may be hereafter defined or extended, shall be under the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the United States. All the laws applicable to places under the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the United States, shall have force and effect in said park. Nothing in this Act shall be construed to forbid the service in the park of any civil or criminal process of any court having jurisdiction in the States of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. All fugitives from justice taking refuge in said park shall be subject to the same laws as refugees from justice found in the State of Wyoming.
