16 U.S.C. § 410mm — Establishment

(a) Purpose; designation — This subsection creates Great Basin National Park (called "the park"). Its purpose is to preserve, for the public's benefit and inspiration, a representative piece of the Great Basin region of the western United States — an area with outstanding resources and important geological and scenic value. (b) Composition; filing of map; public inspection — The park covers about 76,000 acres, shown on the map "Boundary Map, Great Basin National Park, Nevada," numbered NA-GB 20,017, dated October 1986. That map is kept on file for public viewing at National Park Service offices and at the Office of the Superintendent of Great Basin National Park in Nevada. (c) Filing of legal description; public inspection — Within 6 months after October 27, 1986, the Secretary of the Interior (called "the Secretary") must file a written legal description of the park with the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. That legal description carries the same legal force as if it were written directly into this subchapter. The one exception: the Secretary may fix clerical and typographical mistakes in the legal description and in the map from subsection (a). The legal description is also kept on file at National Park Service offices. (d) Incorporation of Lehman Caves National Monument within park (1) The Lehman Caves National Monument — created on January 24, 1922, by presidential proclamation under the Act of June 8, 1906 (34 Stat. 225) — is abolished, and its land becomes part of Great Basin National Park. Anywhere a law, map, regulation, document, record, or other government paper refers to that national monument, the reference now means Great Basin National Park instead. (2) Any money that had been available for the national monument becomes available for the park instead.
