16 U.S.C. § 410y–4 — Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Commission

(a) Establishment: This section creates the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Commission. (b) Membership: The Commission has 19 members, appointed by the Secretary for 5-year terms: (1) eight members recommended by the county boards or councils of Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, and Allegany Counties, Maryland — two from each; (2) eight members recommended by the Governors of Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, and the Mayor of D.C. — two from each; and (3) three members appointed directly by the Secretary, one as Chairman and two from established conservation organizations. (c) Vacancies: A vacancy is filled the same way as the original appointment. A member may keep serving past their term until a successor takes office. (d) Compensation and expenses: Members serve without pay, but the Secretary may pay the Commission's and members' reasonable expenses, on vouchers signed by the Chairman. (e) Consultation: The Secretary, or a designee, must meet and consult with the Commission at least once a year on the park's general policies and specific administration and development matters. (f) Majority vote: The Commission acts and gives advice by a majority vote of its members. (g) Termination: The Commission stops existing on October 1, 2031.
