This section permits the Secretary to support international efforts against tropical deforestation and degradation through meetings, technical assistance, research, training, and cooperation.
To support the Tropical Forestry Action Plan and address tropical deforestation and degradation, the Secretary* may: (1) support and participate in global and regional meetings seeking to reform the Plan; (2) with USAID and other Federal agencies, provide tropical countries technical help to create national forestry-sector strategies; and (3) cooperate with tropical countries on research, training, and technical programs implementing those strategies.
In support of the Tropical Forestry Action Plan and to specifically address tropical deforestation and degradation, the Secretary* may—
support and actively participate in global and regional meetings that seek to reform such Plan;
together with the United States Agency for International Development,1 and other Federal agencies, provide technical assistance to tropical countries for the formulation of national forestry sector development strategies; and
cooperate with tropical countries on research, training, and technical programs aimed at implementing national forestry sector development strategies.
