This law creates the Rattlesnake Wilderness inside Montana's Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. It covers about 33,000 acres shown on a 1980 map. The Secretary of Agriculture must manage it under the Wilderness Act's wilderness rules.

(a) Designation of area: To carry out the Wilderness Act, this law designates about 33,000 acres inside the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area as wilderness. The exact area is shown on a map called "Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness—Proposed," dated October 1, 1980. This area is named the Rattlesnake Wilderness. (b) Administration: Subject to existing valid rights, the Secretary of Agriculture (called "the Secretary" in this law) must manage the Rattlesnake Wilderness under the same rules the Wilderness Act uses for any wilderness area. Wherever the Wilderness Act refers to its own "effective date," that phrase instead means the effective date of this law.
