18 U.S.C. § 440 — Mail contracts

This section is a conflict-of-interest and bribery rule for Postal Service employees. It applies to anyone employed in the Postal Service. That person breaks the law if they become interested — meaning they get a financial stake — in any contract for carrying the mail. It's also a violation if that employee acts as an agent, whether or not they're paid for it, for a contractor, or for anyone who is trying to become a contractor, in any business before the Postal Service. Anyone who violates this section can be fined under this title's general fine provisions, imprisoned for up to one year, or both. The rule exists to keep postal employees from personally profiting off mail-carrying contracts they may have influence over.
