Demanding or receiving money or something valuable in exchange for not reporting a United States-law violation is a federal crime.
Anyone who, by threatening to report a violation of United States law or in exchange for not reporting one, demands or receives money or another valuable thing may be fined under this title, imprisoned for up to one year, or both.
Whoever, under a threat of informing, or as a consideration for not informing, against any violation of any law of the United States, demands or receives any money or other valuable thing, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
