20 U.S.C. § 65a — Director of the National Museum

(a) Duties: Under the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution's direction, the Director of the National Museum has six duties: cooperate with museums and their professional organizations on an ongoing study of museum problems and opportunities, in the U.S. and abroad; prepare and run training programs — by grant, contract, or directly — for career employees in museum practices, working with museums, their organizations, and colleges or universities, either at the Smithsonian or at the cooperating institution; prepare and distribute significant museum publications; do research on museum techniques, especially conservation, and help develop a national museum conservation institute; cooperate with other federal departments and agencies that operate, help, or otherwise deal with museums; and report to Congress each year on progress in these activities. (b) Authorization of appropriations: Congress authorized $803,000 for the Smithsonian Institution for fiscal year 1981, and $1,000,000 for fiscal year 1982, to carry out these duties.
