33 U.S.C. § 26a — Additional portion of Calumet River, old channel, abandoned as navigable water

This section covers a strip of the old Calumet River channel in sections 18 and 19, township 37 north, range 15 east, of the third principal meridian, in Cook County, Illinois. To be abandoned, this strip must meet two location conditions: it must lie outside the new channel lines the United States set up (shown on the map mentioned in section 26 of this title), and it must also lie outside the outer edges of a turning basin planned for that same stretch of river. The abandonment does not happen right away. It only takes effect once the United States has secured title — legal ownership — of the land needed to build that turning basin. The turning basin's exact spot, somewhere between 113th Street and 117th Street in the city of Chicago, must be approved by the Chief of Engineers. Once the United States owns that land, the described strip stops being navigable water of the United States.
