34 U.S.C. § 40728 — Establishment of best practices for evidence retention

(a) In general The Director of the National Institute of Justice, working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and government laboratories, must establish best practices for evidence retention, focused on preserving forensic evidence. The Director must also help state, local, and tribal governments adopt and use those best practices. (b) Deadline The Director had to publish the best practices within 1 year after December 16, 2016. (c) Limitation Nothing in this section requires anyone to follow the best practices established under subsection (a)(1).
