The Department of Veterans Affairs has a Deputy Secretary, appointed by the President with Senate approval. The Deputy Secretary does whatever tasks the Secretary assigns. If the Secretary is away, disabled, or the position is vacant, the Deputy Secretary normally becomes Acting Secretary, unless the President names someone else.
This section has no lettered subsections. It creates the position of Deputy Secretary* of Veterans Affairs within the Department*. The President appoints the Deputy Secretary, with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Deputy Secretary performs whatever functions the Secretary prescribes.
Unless the President designates a different officer of the Government instead, the Deputy Secretary is Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs during the Secretary's absence or disability, or when the office of Secretary is vacant.
There is in the Department* a Deputy Secretary* of Veterans Affairs, who is appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Deputy Secretary shall perform such functions as the Secretary shall prescribe. Unless the President designates another officer of the Government, the Deputy Secretary shall be Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs during the absence or disability of the Secretary or in the event of a vacancy in the office of Secretary.
