The Interior Secretary, through the Geological Survey Director, must complete a nationwide geothermal-resource assessment and report its results. The assessment must be updated at least every ten years, with specified authorizations.
(a) By January 1, 2012, Interior, through the USGS Director*, must complete a comprehensive nationwide assessment covering the full range of United States geothermal resources and report results to the House Natural Resources and Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committees. (b) At least every ten years, the Secretary* must update the assessment to support public and private decisions. (c) The section authorizes $15 million for each fiscal year 2008-2012 and necessary sums for each fiscal year 2013-2022.
Not later than January 1, 2012, the Secretary* of the Interior, acting through the Director* of the United States Geological Survey, shall—
complete a comprehensive nationwide geothermal resource assessment that examines the full range of geothermal resources in the United States; and
submit to the the 1 Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate a report describing the results of the assessment.
At least once every 10 years, the Secretary shall update the national assessment required under this section to support public and private sector decisionmaking.
There are authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary of the Interior to carry out this section—
$15,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2008 through 2012; and
such sums as are necessary for each of fiscal years 2013 through 2022.
