The Director already has authority to fight waste, fraud, and mismanagement of federal funds. This section adds power to run risk assessments on research award applications. The Director works through the Research Security and Policy office with the Inspector General.
On top of existing powers to prevent waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement of federal money, the Director* gets authority to run risk assessments — including through open-source analysis and other analytical tools — of research and development award applications and the disclosures that go with them. The Director exercises this authority through the Office of Research Security and Policy, working together with the Foundation's Office of Inspector General.
In addition to existing authorities for preventing waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement of Federal funds, the Director*, acting through the Office of Research Security and Policy and in coordination with the Foundation’s Office of Inspector General, shall have the authority to conduct risk assessments, including through the use of open-source analysis and analytical tools, of research and development award applications and disclosures to the Foundation.
