42 U.S.C. § 19051 — Broader impacts

(a) Assessment. Within 120 days of August 9, 2022, the Director must contract with a qualified independent organization to study how the Broader Impacts review criterion is applied across the Foundation and to recommend ways to make it work better toward the goals set out in section 1862p-14 of this title. (b) Activities. The Director must make competitive awards to colleges or nonprofits, including groups of them, to fund activities that make it easier and more effective to carry out the Broader Impacts criterion. This includes training and workshops for program officers, review panelists, award administrators, faculty, and students so they better understand the criterion's goals and the full range of impacts that can satisfy it; shared repositories where people can find best practices and collaborate; and tools for evaluating and documenting the societal impact of research.
