42 U.S.C. § 19057 — Food-energy-water research

The Director must fund competitive research on how food, energy, and water systems connect. This research should build better computer models and real-time tools for decision-making. It should also train more scientists to study and manage these systems.
The Director* must make competitive awards to colleges or nonprofits, including groups of them, to: fund research that significantly improves our understanding of the food-energy-water system, using quantitative and computer modeling, including support for the computing infrastructure that requires; develop real-time, cyber-enabled tools that improve understanding of how food-energy-water systems behave and help people make better decisions about them; fund research that leads to new solutions for serious food-energy-water problems; and grow the number of scientists who can study and manage the food-energy-water system, through education and other professional development.
The Director* shall make awards on a competitive basis to institutions of higher education or non-profit organizations (or consortia of such institutions or organizations) to—
support research to significantly advance our understanding of the food-energy-water system through quantitative and computational modeling, including support for relevant cyberinfrastructure;
develop real-time, cyber-enabled interfaces that improve understanding of the behavior of food-energy-water systems and increase decision support capability;
support research that will lead to innovative solutions to critical food-energy-water system problems; and
grow the scientific workforce capable of studying and managing the food-energy-water system, through education and other professional development.
