As required by another law, the Director must support sustainable chemistry research and teaching. This means funding individual researchers, teams, and partnerships between universities and industry. Sustainable chemistry must also be built into school curricula and existing Foundation programs.
Following the requirements of section 9303 of title 15, the Director* must carry out activities that support sustainable chemistry. This includes setting up a program of competitive awards to colleges or nonprofits, including groups of them, to support: individual researchers and research teams, including early-career researchers, doing research and development; collaborative research and development partnerships among universities, industry, and nonprofit organizations; and building sustainable chemistry principles into chemistry and chemical engineering curricula and research training at the elementary, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels, as fits each level. The Director must also work sustainable chemistry into the Foundation's existing research and development programs.
In accordance with section 9303 of title 15, the Director* shall carry out activities in support of sustainable chemistry, including—
establishing a program to make awards, on a competitive basis, to institutions of higher education or non-profit organizations (or consortia of such institutions or organizations) to support—
individual investigators and teams of investigators, including to the extent practicable, early career investigators for research and development;
collaborative research and development partnerships among universities, industry, and non-profit organizations;
integrating sustainable chemistry principles into elementary, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate chemistry and chemical engineering curriculum and research training, as appropriate to that level of education and training; and
incorporating sustainable chemistry into existing Foundation research and development programs.
