42 U.S.C. § 19070 — Research on the impact of inflation

The Director may fund research studying how inflation affects Americans. This research can cover wages, competitiveness, rural communities, and future generations. It can also study how government spending affects inflation itself.
(a) In general. The Director* may make competitive, merit-reviewed awards to colleges or nonprofits, including groups of them, to fund research that improves our understanding of inflation's effects.
(b) Use of funds. Money from these awards may go toward: measuring inflation's economic impact on Americans, including its effect on cost of living and wages; looking at how inflation affects America's ability to compete internationally; studying how inflation affects rural and underserved communities; assessing how inflation could affect future generations of Americans; and evaluating how policy decisions, including further government spending, affect inflation itself.
(c) Coordination to avoid duplication. When making these awards, the Director must consult, work with, and coordinate with other relevant federal agencies' programs and policies, so the research does not repeat work already being done.
The Director* may make awards, on a competitive merit-reviewed basis, to institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations (or consortia of such institutions or organizations) to support research to improve our understanding of the impact of inflation.
Activities funded by an award under this section may include—
measuring the economic impact of inflation on the American people, including an analysis of cost-of-living and wage impacts;
considering the impact of inflation on American international competitiveness;
evaluating the impact of inflation on rural and underserved communities throughout the country;
assessing the ways inflation could impact future American generations; and
evaluating the impact of policymaking on inflation, including the impact of further Government spending.
In making awards under this section, the Director shall, for purposes of avoiding duplication of activities and research, consult, collaborate, and coordinate with the programs and policies of other relevant Federal agencies.
