42 U.S.C. § 247b–19 — Information and education

(a) In general The Secretary of Health and Human Services must set up and run a program giving health professionals and the general public information and education on muscular dystrophy. This includes information on advances in diagnosing and treating it, and training and continuing education for scientists, doctors, medical students, and other health professionals who care for muscular dystrophy patients. (b) Stipends The Secretary may use this section's funds to pay stipends to health professionals enrolled in these training programs. (c) Requirements In carrying out this section, the Secretary may (1) partner with leaders in the muscular dystrophy patient community; (2) work with professional organizations and the patient community to create, issue, and periodically review and update care guidelines for pediatric and adult patients — including acute care — for Duchenne-Becker and other forms of muscular dystrophy; (3) when updating those guidelines, use findings from the national survey of minority, young adult, and adult muscular dystrophy communities and how they transition through care; and (4) share the muscular dystrophy care guidelines as widely as possible, including by partnering with the patient community. (d) Authorization of appropriations Whatever money is necessary is authorized to carry out this section.
